This Fashion Friday, I wanted to talk a little about personal style.

This is something I am learning more and more about as the Fashion Friday weeks go by.  Fashion Friday has been such a fun project for me because it’s really forced me to look at what my personal style is.

Here’s the thing; your personal style is whatever you like.  Not what you think you can pull off.  Not what you “dare” wear.  It’s what you like.

I don’t know why this has been so hard for me.  I see something in the store or someone wearing something and I think, “I LOVE that, but I would never be able to wear it.” Dressing for your body type is one thing, but I am have made a conscious effort to wear things I like just because I like them.  I never thought I’d be able to pull off wearing ankle boots but I always loved them… you know what I did?  I got myself a pair for Christmas (I mean… Santa got me a pair for Christmas) and I love them.  I feel so sassy every time I wear them.  Turns out, they are my style.

I used to do the same thing with red lips (which is weird since I’m the biggest red-lip advocate now) but I always thought I looked like Ronald McDonald when I wore red lips.  But really.. who cares?  I love how classy they look and I love the way I feel when I have red lips.  So that’s my style.

I also used to think I couldn’t pull off a topknot. (Gasp!) Needless to say, I got over that one real quick. 😉  Trying something new always feels a little strange, but if you like it on someone else, chances are you’ll like it on yourself.  Because it’s your style.

And let me introduce you to someone who has no fear when it comes to what she wears.  She knows what she likes, she knows exactly what she feels beautiful in.  She has taught me almost everything I know about style.

My Harlo. (and her favorite subject to style: Stella)

(Fashion Friday makeovers: Hair by Me, wardrobe and accessories by Harlo)

Seriously, this used to be something that drove me nuts about Harlo.  She is constantly fighting me on what she wants to wear, always opting for a tutu or princess crown, or neon pink shoes.. It was a fight every single day.  Until I realized this was exactly her way of expressing herself.  She feels beautiful, confident and comfortable when she dresses herself.  Who in the world am I to take that from her?  Instead, I took a much needed lesson from her.  Now, it’s  one of my favorite things about my sweet four-year-old.  I hope she never loses this self assurance.  No fear of judgement from the world, completely comfortable in her own skin.

Wouldn’t it be nice to feel like that?

I sure love these ladies.  I so appreciate the lessons they teach me about life.

Happy Fashion Friday, and happy styling!
